I got rid of all the cables in my bedroom.

Five cables, two power strips, zero free space. Until the day I took a photo of my nightstand and decided I had enough.

Three weeks ago, I took a picture of my nightstand. Not for Instagram. To force myself to see what I hadn't seen for two years. Five white cables, two stacked power strips, a charger squeezed between the alarm clock and the glass of water. I had spent months choosing the terracotta wallpaper and the brass lamp. Everything was thought through. Except this corner of the room — the one you see first when going to bed.

I showed the photo to my sister. “It looks like the back of an Ikea desk.” I laughed. Then I looked at the photo a second time, and I wasn't laughing at all anymore.

“Five cables, two power strips, zero free space. It had been like that for two years and I didn't even notice it anymore.” Sophie Marchand

The video that started it all

It happened on a Thursday evening while scrolling. A short sixteen-second video. A still shot of a nightstand identical to mine — the same mess of cables, the same visual embarrassment. Then a transition. And suddenly: the exact same nightstand, completely clutter-free. A single object resting on it, compact, elegant. An iPhone magnetically attached to the front. An Apple Watch on the side. AirPods in the center. Zero visible cables.

Bye-bye cables, power strips, and clutter on the nightstand.

I saw my own photo in that video. It was exactly my before.

The object

One object, three devices, a single cable to the outlet

The object is called Echo. It is made by a French brand, Les Petits Chargeurs, and designed by Aurélie Boiselle. The principle is disarmingly simple : a single USB-C cable goes to the outlet. Three MagSafe charging zones integrated into a compact 179 mm long housing — smaller than a paperback book. You place your iPhone on the front, it snaps magnetically into place. AirPods nest in the central recess. Apple Watch attaches to the side dock.

I ordered one that very evening, in black. It arrived four days later in a neat matte box, packaged like fine jewelry. Ever since, my nightstand looks nothing like that photo.

What changes after a week without cables

The first night, I checked three times that it was working. No light. No beep. Just the snap soft click of the iPhone attaching magnetically, and silence. In the morning: three devices at 100%. The next morning too.

After a week, I tucked the five cables and two power strips into a drawer. I haven't opened it since. After two weeks, my husband asked me « what is this thing? » — then he ordered one for his side of the bed.

What you gain isn't time. It's a visual calmness we didn't realize was missing. The nightstand becomes what it should be again: a clear space. A book, a lamp, a discreet object that does it all.

The design

“We wanted an object that sits there unnoticed.”

I contacted Aurélie Boiselle, the designer behind the Echo model, to understand this choice of organic shapes. “Most chargers look like gadgets,” she explained to me. “Shiny plastic, blue LEDs, raised logo. The Echo is the exact opposite: a soft shape, a matte finish, not a single indicator light. We wanted an object that sits on a nightstand without being noticed. Not a gadget — a piece of furniture.”

“The ultimate test is when someone walks into the bedroom and doesn't notice it. It's there, charging three devices, and nobody even sees it. That's exactly what we wanted.” Aurélie Boiselle — Designer of the Echo model

The same word comes up in every review

On the brand's website, the average rating for the Echo borders on 4.9 out of 5. But what stands out, beyond the score, is how often the same word comes up: nightstand. People don't talk about watts or Qi compatibility. They talk about the space they've reclaimed.

Camille, thirty-four, Nantes: "I used to have four cables on my nightstand. Now I have a book and the Echo. My boyfriend is jealous of my side of the bed." Julien, forty, Lyon: "Given to my wife for her birthday. She told me it was the first tech gift that didn't look like a tech gift." Nathalie, fifty-two, Bordeaux: "I threw away three chargers and a power strip the day I received it. Liberating."

Three weeks after the photo, my nightstand finally looks like what I had imagined the day I chose the wallpaper. Not a single cable left. No more power strips. Just an open book, a brass lamp, and a small black object that no one notices.

This morning, it was 7h14. I didn't look for anything.
